A pharmacy technology company serving over 500 independent pharmacies across the UK needed to replace its fleet of enterprise PDA scanning hardware — the handheld devices used by pharmacists for stock management, barcode scanning, and inventory control. The branded alternatives from established PDA manufacturers were quoted at $975 per unit, making a fleet-wide refresh prohibitively expensive.
The challenge was twofold: the replacement hardware needed to be fully compatible with the existing pharmacy inventory management software (including StockRX integration), and the units needed to meet the durability, battery life, and scanning performance standards expected in a healthcare environment.
Before approaching any manufacturer, we worked with the client's technical team to map the exact hardware specification requirements: Android version compatibility, barcode scanning type (1D/2D), WiFi and Bluetooth standards, display size, battery capacity, IP rating for dust/splash resistance, and — critically — software compatibility with the client's existing inventory platform.
We identified manufacturers in Shenzhen and Guangzhou specializing in enterprise-grade PDA hardware. Each factory was audited for ISO 9001 certification, production capacity, documented export history, and after-sales support infrastructure. We specifically excluded factories primarily producing consumer-grade devices.
Sample units were shipped to the client for a 4-week field trial across multiple pharmacy locations. The client's development team verified full software compatibility, scanning performance, battery life under real-world conditions, and user feedback from pharmacists.
